FROM INVISIBILITY TO APPRECIATION: RECOGNIZING WHAT WE CARRY.

exploring change

In today’s world, many people move through life feeling invisible—unseen, unheard, and unrecognized for what they have to offer humanity. Their experiences, strengths, knowledge, and potential may go unnoticed, not because they lack value, but because others may fail to recognize or appreciate what they bring.

Over the years, I have experienced moments when my presence seemed invisible to others. I recall an interview in which I felt uncomfortable but could not immediately explain why. Through reflection and journaling, I began to understand what had troubled me. It was not simply the experience of being overlooked or ghosted; it was the feeling of being present yet not fully seen or acknowledged by the interviewer.

That experience prompted me to reflect more deeply on how we recognize human worth, engage with one another, and create opportunities for people to contribute meaningfully. It also strengthened my commitment to developing an Appreciation-Based Human-Centered Practice—an approach grounded in the belief that every person carries strengths, experiences, capabilities, and possibilities that deserve to be recognized and cultivated.

Appreciation is an undervalued human capacity. Although many of us carry it within, we do not always express it meaningfully, intentionally, or consistently. Appreciation is more than a compliment or a passing acknowledgment. It is a way of seeing, listening, engaging, and responding that affirms human worth while creating space for growth, connection, and possibility.

The **5Rs—Reframe, Rephrase, Reposition, Readjust, and Repurpose—**offer a practical pathway for moving from invisibility toward recognition and meaningful contribution. We can reframe experiences that diminish our sense of worth, rephrase the stories we tell ourselves and others, reposition our strengths and perspectives, readjust how we engage with people and opportunities, and repurpose what we carry into purposeful action.

My intention in writing this book is to explore how appreciation can become more than an individual feeling or an occasional expression of gratitude. It can become a sustained human-centered practice that influences how we see ourselves, recognize others, navigate challenges, and create opportunities for people to contribute their gifts to the world.

I am certainly not the first to speak about the invisibility people experience or the ways we may make ourselves invisible. However, in today’s AI-emphasized work environment, I believe meaningful change begins with our relationship with ourselves before extending to others and organizations. By recognizing and appreciating what we carry—our strengths, experiences, and potential—we establish an anchor for personal growth and purposeful action. The 5Rs framework—Reframe, Rephrase, Reposition, Readjust, and Repurpose—provides a pathway for transforming this awareness into meaningful relationships, recognizing the value others bring, and creating opportunities for human potential to flourish without unnecessary limitations.

When we learn to recognize what we carry, we become better equipped to recognize what others carry, too. The journey from invisibility to appreciation begins with how we see, acknowledge, and engage with the humanity in ourselves and one another.
